Open your books at page170-171. On this spread you have the Revise & Check section. Do the drills in the first part and check your answers with the key.

Then, read the text about The London Dungeon and do ex b. Pls check the key in this FOLDER. 

Now play the video  Can you understand these people? or listen to the MP3. Then do the multiple choice questions. Both the video and the MP3 file, together with the key can be found in the FOLDER.

Also, I have included a Worksheet with Vocabulary Revision Phrasal Verbs. Try to do it and then check your answers.

B1 - End-of-Course Revision

Dear Students,
we have to do some final practice to revise the course and prepare for the exam.

In this FOLDER you'll find an End-of-Course Test. Pls do all the exercises to help you monitor your progress and find the weak points you need to work on.

Also there is a folder with an extra listening test. Listen to the recordings twice and do the exercises. Don't read the script beforehand, only at the end, when you are checking your answers. Remember that you are not expected to understand everything. You have to focus on the questions only.

Dear Students,

for today's class we need to open your books at page 168, 5 Reading and Listening.
We are going to read and listen to the short story by Ruth Rendell, entitled May and June.

Please play recording 10.14 and read and listen to Part 1.(vocabulary help: comfort, consolar)

Now do the same with Part 2 (10.15). Answer the questions in ex c. (vocabulary help: refuse, negarse).
Now do ex d. Find the recordings and key in this FOLDER.

Now, on page 169 listen to Part 3 (10.16) and answer the questions in ex g. Check your answers. Did you like the story?

Finally, we are going to watch the documentary Queens of Crime. You'll find the video in this FOLDER. If you like, you can take notes in the grid in ex b. Did you find it interesting?

B1 - FILE 10 (FOURTH PART)

Dear Students,

Today we are going to study Question Tags. Open your books at page 167. Listen to recording 10.10 and complete the sentences in ex b.

Questions tags are reduced questions that we use at the end of a statement for confirmation. They are widely used in the English language.

• If the sentence is positive, the tag is negative, and the other way round.
• We have to use the SAME tense and the SAME subject.

Ex. You are my friend, AREN'T YOU? (+/-)
       She isn't from Japan, IS SHE? (-/+)

Now go to page 223. Look at the chart with examples of different tenses and listen to the recording. See how different tenses work in the question tags. Do exercises a and b and  check your answers on the key.

Now go back to page 167. 4 PRONUNCIATION AND SPEAKING. Questions tags have rising intonation. Listen and complete the sentences is ex a. Then repeat after the recording in 10.13.

You will find more exercises on page 176  of your books and on the Worksheet 10B Question Tags in this FOLDER. Also, I have included a PDF with extra grammar information and exercises. Please read it and try to do the exercises. Then check your answers with the key.

Dear Students,

Pls open your books page 165. Look at exercise 7 Vocabulary and pronunciation. We are going to form compound nouns (N+N), the first noun modifies the second. Do exercise a and then listen to the answers in the recording 10.5. Now complete the boxes in ex c. Find the audio file plus key in this FOLDER.

Now I need you to turn the page. We are going to start 10B. First we'll deal with Vocabulary: Crime. Jack the Ripper is Jack el Destripador, as you may know. Try to complete the definitions in ex b using the words in the box. Then listen and check.

Now I'd like you to read the text The Greatest Unsolved Crime and complete the gaps with the words in b. Here's the answer: 2murderer 3victims 4witnesses 5detectives 6evidence 7prove 8suspects 9solve

The next exercise is on p 167. Listening. Listen to the interview with a retired police inspector and look at the pictures and mark Jan Bondeson's suspect and occupation. Then listen again and complete the chart about Jan in b. Now you have to do the same for Bruce Robinson and Patricia Cornwell. In this FOLDER  you'll find the audio files, key and scripts.

Dear Students,

in today's class we are going to do the Listening exercise on page 164. Look at the pictures and listen to the first recording (find the audio files for File 10 in this FOLDER).

Now listen to the second recording, 10.4. Take notes for as much detailed information as you can about the articles in b. You can listen to it twice, if you need it. Then check them with the script (it is in the FOLDER too).

B1 - File 10 (first part)

Dear Students,
in today's lesson we are going to do File 10A Idols and icons, on page 162. The most important part of it is the Grammar. We'll be tackling Relative Sentences. Please go to your Grammar Bank, page 222.

Relative Clauses can be DEFINING and NON-DEFINING.

DEFINING:
They are essential to the sentence. Without them, the meaning is incomplete.

WHO (or THAT) is used to refer to people.
WHICH (or THAT) to things or animals.
WHERE for places.
WHOSE means of who or of which (in Spanish, cuyo)

Ex. The man who (that) lives next door is bad-tempered.

We need to define The man to know who we are talking about.
If the relative pronoun (who, which, that) is NOT the subject of the verb in the relative clause, it can be omitted.
Ex. She is the student (WHO/THAT) I met at the party.

As you can see, the subject of met is not who or that. It is I, so, the relative pronoun can be left out.

Ex. She is the student WHO/ THAT passed all the exams.
The subject of passed is who or that (quien/que), so it CAN'T be omitted.

NON-DEFINING
They are not essential. If you omit them, the sentence still retains its full meaning. They add extra information to the sentence.

• The main characteristic is that they are BETWEEN COMMAS.
• The pronouns WHO, WHICH, WHERE and WHOSE must be always present.
• THAT is not possible.

Ex.  My neighbour, WHO has just bought a new bicycle, is the loveliest person in the street.
Ex. My car ,WHICH I washed yesterday, has been stolen.

Now do exercises a and b on page 222 and check your answers.

Dear Students,
in today's lesson we are going to do Practical English 5: Unexpected Events.

In the FOLDER below, you'll find a link to the videos and a PDF with the Answer Key.

Open your books on page 152. Watch the Video 1 Jenny gets a surprise. Then do ex b, T or F. Check your answers with the key.

Now we are going to revise Indirect Questions.  Cover the dialogue in you books and watch Video 2, Indirect Questions. Now answer the questions in ex b. Check your answers. Before watching the video again, look at the dialogue in c. Try to complete the gaps, if you remember. Now, watch again. Check your answers. There are some examples of reported questions, that we studied in File 8B.
If you like, you could do the video in d: Watch and repeat, as we did in class. Look at the chart on page 153 to revise Indirect Questions.

Let's move on to Video 3 Rob gets serious. Watch the video and answer ex b. Now do exercise c Social English and watch video 9.26. Check your answers. These are useful everyday expressions well worth learning. Exercise e provides practice for those phrases. Do it and check it is correct.

If you need extra practice, you can use your Online Practice access to revise the lesson and work a bit more on the structures. Also, you'll find some more exercises in your Workbook, on p 160.

Dear Students,
in this folder you'll find a Revision Test for lesson 9. You have the questions, the recordings, the scripts and the key. Please take some time to do it to revise and practice the contents of the unit.

B1 - Writing an argumentative text.

Dear Students,

In today's class we are going to do the writing exercise: An Article. Please go to p 195 of your books.
This article about Wikipedia states the advantages and disadvantages of it.
In exercise b you have to correct the marked mistakes. Here's the key:

Now look at the box in ex d. In it you'll find useful vocabulary and phrases for this kind of writing.

When composing a for/against article, it's usually a good idea to plan the content ahead. For example, you could draft a few advantages and disadvantages, i.e. pros and cons about the topic you are going to broach. Try to balance the positive and negative, if possible. Distributing the information into paragraphs will make it easier to read and your point will be made more effectively.

The first paragraph should contain an introduction.

Second and third, the advantages and disadvantages.

And the final one is perfect for the conclusion, recap, or recommendation.

B1 - F9 (third part)

Dear Students,

At the end of this post you'll find an IMPORTANT FOLDER with the KEY to all the exercises in the Book and Workbook. You can check your answers there. I have also included the audio files for both.

Today we need to start File 9B, Digital Detox. Open your books at p148. The first ex is about vocabulary. Match the words and the photos in ex b. Then listen to the recording. Check your answers. Now, ex d presents verbs that come in handy when we want to talk about technology. Do the exercise end check your answers with the recordings. Now look at the box Separable phrasal verbs. In English we use Phrasal Verbs, which are verbs composed of an infinitive plus one or more particles. Some of them are separable, that is, the object, if it is a noun, can appear before or after the particle. If it is a pronoun, then this must always take mid-position.

On p149 there is a Listening exercise. Read the text Less Time Online, make sure you understand the expression "phone stacking". In the last paragraph you'll see the verb "unplug", in Spanish, "desconectar". Now you are ready to listen to ex c. This is an introduction to ex d. Listen to both recordings twice and do ex e, True or False. Find the key in the Folder.

On p150 you'll find the Grammar: Quantifiers. Do ex a and b as a dictation. Now go to p 221 to your Grammar Bank. When we use quantifiers in English, we have to consider quantity: large or small, if the noun is countable or uncountable and if the sentence is positive, negative or interrogative. Read the examples in the boxes. Also, look at TOO and ENOUGH /ɪˈnʌf/. In the FOLDER I have included an Extra Grammar PDF with more explanations and exercises + key. Do the exercises on page 221.

Now go back to p150. Look at 4 Pronunciation. The spellings -ough and -augh are tricky, as they can be pronounced in different ways and there are no rules. Classify the words in ex a and listen and repeat in ex b and c.

 Exercise 5 Reading is an interesting text entitled 11 Ways to Tidy Up our Digital Life. Read it and do ex c, d and e. The expression "at your fingertips" means "a tu disposición".

Now do the exercises on the Worksheet for 9B, Grammar. You will find it in the Folder in the Blog Entry for File 9 (first part) posted on the 30th of March. Remember that you also have the Workbook pages for 9B  (p 157-159) and the Online Practice. Access with your code and do the extra exercises that you consider you need revise File 9B. B1 - File 9A (second part)

Dear Students,

for today's class you need to open your books page 145. Look at exercise 3 Pronunciation. It's very important to listen to the recording carefully and repeat the sentences paying attention to the pronunciation and intonation. When HAVE is after would the vowel is weakened to schwa. /hǝv/ Practice the dictation sentences in b. Find the key in the Folder attached at the end of this post.

To practise the third conditional more, do the exercises on the PDF in the Folder. there are sentences of the three types of conditionals and the key is included.

Now go to page 146 of your books. Reading Comprehension. Read the text about luck and do exercises b and c. Here's the key:
1B, 2E, 3C, 4D, 5A. For the multiple choice (c): 1a, 2b, 3a, 4b, 5c.

Now look at exercise 5 VOCABULARY. It's about word building, that is, creating words from other words, in this case, nouns. Go to page 236, Part 2. Read the box and then complete the chart in a. Listen to the recording. Then, try to form new words in ex c and fill in the gaps. Listen to the recording. You'll find the key to this in the Folder. If you want extra practice, try to do Worksheet Vocabulary 9A. You will find it in the Folder in the previous class.

Finally we are going to learn how to write an email of complaint. For this, you need to go to page 194. For this kind of documents we have to use formal language and a specific format. The name, job and address of the person we are writing to have be included in the right top corner. Then, the date. Use Dear Sir/Madam if you don't know the person's name or Dear Ms/Mr (Smith) if you do. End the email with Yours faithfully in the first case and Yours sincerely in the second.

Complete the gaps in the letter and check your answers with the key in the Folder.

B1 - File 9A (First part)

Dear students,
for this lesson we need to revise Files 7&8. Go to page 136-137. On this spread you will see the Revise and Check section with revision exercises and an extra Reading and Video Listening. In the Folder below you'll find the key.

We have to start File 9A on page 144. We're going to study the Third Conditional and more Word-building.
Conditional sentences Type 3 are used to talk about unreal or hypothetical situations. The basic pattern is:

IF  PAST PERFECT                +     WOULD HAVE PAST PARTICIPLE
If I had bought that lottery ticket, I would have won a lot of money.

VARIATION: MIGHT or COULD instead of WOULD

Now do exercise b. Read and listen to the text. Some help with the vocabulary:
knock on: Llamar a la puerta
wonder: preguntarse
hitchhike: hacer autoestop
rudely: maleducadamente

After that you need to listen to the recording in exercise c. You'll find the script on page 202, 9.2. (vocabulary help: rush: apresurarse)

On page 145 go to exercise e. There are three stories of people who were helped by strangers. You have to listen to the recordings and match three sentences to each story.
The answers are: a3, b2, c3, d1, e2, f1, g3, h1, i2.
Then, listen again and read the scripts on page 203, 9.3.

Now 2 GRAMMAR third conditional.
Match the sentence halves: 1C, 2B, 3A, 4D. All the situations expressed are imaginary, unreal only hypotheses.
Please go to page 220 for the grammar. Read it closely. Careful with the contraction 'D. It can be HAD or WOULD.
If I'd (HAD) known you had a problem, I'd (WOULD) have helped you.

Do the exercises and check your answers on the key in the Folder.

B1 - File 8 (and fourth part)

Dear Students,

Today we are going to do File 8B Part 4.

Open your books on page 135. 7 Vocabulary. We are going to do Word-building, Part 1. Look at exercise a: the nouns come from the verbs compensate, complain and pay.

Now you need to go page 236. WORD-BUILDING. The first exercise is about making nouns from verbs. There are some endings like -ation and -ment. Other words don't have a common ending. Pls do ex a. Find the key in the Folder below. It's very important to listen to the recording, as the stress pattern often changes. Then, repeat them. Now do ex c. Check your answers on the Key.
The second part of the Word-building will be studied in a later lesson.

Go back to p 135. We'll do the 8 Video Listening. You can find these two videos on your Online Practice. In them we'll learn how to complain efficiently and politely.

Watch Part 1 and do ex c. Were you correct at guessing them?
Now watch Part 2. For the three situations see what he does wrong and how he can do it better. Check your answers on the Key in the Folder.

Now, I would like you to practice a role play in which you have to complain and/or deal with the complaints. In the Folder you will find Worksheet 8B Communicative, I want to speak to the manager. As in class, it would be ideal to find a partner to speak to and get some speaking practice. There is a similar exercise on pages 181 and 185. Look for 8B. I want to speak to the manager.

Dear Students,

This is the class for File 8 part 3.

Open your books on page 134. We are going to read the article Going the extra mile. It means making an additional effort. Customer service is more important than it used to be because people can use social networks to tell millions of other people about good or bad service.
Read the text and try to guess the end of each story.

Here's some help with vocabulary :
heart-warming - reconfortante
crawl - ir a gatas
parcel - paquete
refund - devolver el dinero.

Then go to page 181, look for 8B Going the Extra Mile, Students A+B and read the endings. Were your predictions right?

Now go back to page 134 and do exercise d. The answers are:

4 A B D

Now we need to  do exercise 5 Pronunciation.
The letters -AI- between consonants are usually pronounced /eI/ if they are stressed. But there are some exceptions, like SAID, /sed/. Try to classify the words in the exercise in the correct box. Listen to them and repeat them. The key is to be found in the Folder below.

Now we are going to do the 6 Listening exercise on page 135.
Try to complete the missing words in exercise b and then listen to the recording.
The answers are:

Now listen to the whole story and answer the questions in c and d.

Dear Students,
we are going to do File 8, second part

On page 129 you'll find the WRITING section, A covering email. A covering email is the email you include with your CV to send to a company or organisation in respond to a job advertisement. We need to use a more formal format and style when we write a covering letter or email.

You have to go to page 193 and read the job advertisement. Then do exercise b. You'll find the answers in the file below. Read the box in exercise c carefully. It's about register and style.

Now go back to page 132. This is File 8B. We are going to learn about Reported Speech and Wordbuilding.
Reported Speech allows us to  report what other people said originally and we need to move the tenses and forms "backwards" in the same way as we would do in Spanish. For example: "Do you need any help?", he said. He asked if I needed any help. (Present S. -to- Past S.)

Go to page 219 and read the grammar explanations carefully. When you are ready, do the exercises a and b on the same page. You'll find the key on the File below.

If you can, try to find someone to speak to for exercise 3 b on page 133, Speaking.

Remember you have extra work on the Workbook grey pages (p 141) and your Online Practice. Also I recommend you look at File 8 of your Pocket Books for Speakers of Spanish.

Dear students,

This is the class for File 8A on page 128.
Please, do exercise 1a and listen to the words. The Key is: A8, B9, C5, D4, E1, F6, G3, H7, I2.

Then, go to page 235 for the vocabulary Bank: Work. Find the key in the File below.
Go back to page 128. Listen to exercise 2a. Pronunciation. Repeat them.

On page 129, do exercise 3a and d Grammar. Find the Key in the File below.

Now go to page 218, Grammar Bank 8A.
There are 3 verb patterns:
-infinitive with TO
-Infinitive without TO
-The gerund -ING
The most difficult part is to remember which verbs are followed by which pattern. In the File below you'll find a comprehensive list for reference and some extra exercises.

Do the exercises on page 218 and check your answers.

Also, do the exercises on the Worksheets  8A Grammar and  8A Vocabulary. Check your answers.
You will find a Communicative Worksheet 8A I think. If you can, find a partner to do the exercise together, checking the answers with the Grammar Reference.
